Effective protein skimming is a must for all marine aquariums. Protein skimmers remove heavy minerals, nitrogenous wastes, amino acids and foreign pollutants from the water column; increasing your water quality and decreasing the time spent maintaining your tank. If you’ve ever questioned the need for a skimmer, look into the collection cup of a high quality skimmer and see what it removes from your system, just be sure to hold your nose!
Several styles of skimmers are available, each with its own application, but they all work based on the same principles. Oxygen molecules are double ended, one is hydrophilic (attracted to water) the other hydrophobic (repels water). By injecting large amounts of fine air bubbles into a column of water, the hydrophobic end of the oxygen molecule will adhere to foreign materials in the water. When the bubbles reach the water surface, they burst and spray the waste into a collection cup. The longer the bubbles are in contact with the water, and the finer the bubbles, the more waste they can remove. A high quality protein skimmer maximizes both.
